Chalvar Monteiro, a native of Montclair, NJ, began his formal dance training at Sharron Miller's Academy for the Performing Arts (SMAPA). He went on to study at The Ailey School, and later received a BFA in Dance from Purchase College at SUNY. There he performed works by Merce Cunningham, Helen Pickett, Kevin Wynn, Dianne McIntyre, Doug Varone, and Paul Taylor.

He began his performance career with the likes of Sidra Bell Dance NY and Kevin Wynn's The Wynn Collection. After graduating he joined Elisa Monte Dance for their 30th anniversary season, and Abraham.In.Motion by Kyle Abraham. Monteiro assisted Kyle on commissions for Emory University, Princeton University, Barnard College, Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Wendy Whelan's Restless Creature, and New York City Ballet. With A.I.M. Chalvar went on to perform at Jacob's Pillow, Fire Island Dance Festival, American Dance Festival, Spoleto Dance Festival, as well as other prestigious festivals and venues. Monteiro was briefly a guest artist with Keigwin + Company, BODYTRAFFIC, and GALLIM.

In 2014, Monteiro was invited to join Ailey II, and later joined the AIvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2015 (AAADT). Chalvar was one of 75 dancers worldwide to participate in the Merce Cunningham Trust’s Centennial Event: Night of 100 Solos. In the fall of 2020 Chalvar joined the faculty of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts Dance Dept. and continues to lead repertory workshops across the US.

Chalvar has presented his choreography at numerous institutions and festivals including SMAPA, Barriskill Dance, Earl Mosley’s Diversity of Dance, Hearts of Men, The Ailey School, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Dance Against Cancer. He created and directed the short dance film “Promise” for AAADT’s 2021 Virtual Spirit Gala. In 2022 Chalvar created work for Kyle Abraham’s ‘Reunions’ at Lincoln Center.

In addition to dancing, Chalvar’s done modeling campaigns for Uniqlo, Moncler, Lululemon, and was feautured in Vogue Beauty’s Texture Diaries.
